A mission for the mother nature

The Western Ghats Hornbill Foundation has been working with government departments, civil society groups, and local communities for conservation and inclusive management of species and ecosystems since 2005. We have been focusing more on species habitat and ecosystem modeling for conservation and ecorestoration. This encompasses a variety of ecosystems located throughout the Western Ghats and its western coast, each requiring specialized scientific planning and implementation. We aim to ensure scientific planning that accommodates the diversity of local, niche-specific species, while implementing a minimum set of protocols that facilitate EbA and the SDGs.

Why hornbills and the rainforests?

We pioneered indigenous community-based conservation and monitoring of hornbills, their nesting trees, and nesting habitat in the tropical rainforest of the Kerala part of the Western Ghats. This has been considered the most effective conservation of the hornbill nests and their habitat, ensuring the rights of the Kadar and other Indigenous communities. This has significantly contributed to the survival of the Great hornbill and Malabar pied hornbill populations in the region, as well as to the site-specific conservation and monitoring of tropical low-elevation and medium-elevation rainforests in the face of climate change.

Our mountain the Western Ghats

The Western Ghats mountain range, which runs parallel to the Western Coast and intersects the monsoon, is the lifeline of Southern India. It gives birth to all major rivers and cradles immense biodiversity, making it part of the Western Ghats—Sri Lanka, a biodiversity hot spot. The ecosystems starting from the montane shola-grassland ecosystems to the tropical rainforests are fragile, being a tropical mountainous region within a monsoonal climatic regime, and have become more vulnerable in this current global environmental crisis and climate change. We partner with everyone for coexistence in this most biodiversity-rich mountainous habitat for the conservation of its natural heritage.
