Riparian Ecosystems had been hardly studied or interpreted in the tropical or Indian region when we started our studies in the Chalakudy river basin in 2001. Our studies widened the understanding of its significance as a local gene pool, ecological corridor, biodiversity rich zone and also an important part of the landscape where humans have intricate cultural, emotional, ecological and livelihood dependance. Our studies divulged a wide range of information which helped for the conservation, management and restoration of these ecosystems. Our studies strengthened the argument that these ecosystems are dynamic, unique, threatened and require urgent protection and restoration. "
